Val Whittaker Memorial Prize 2011 |
Report from Stephanie Emra |
Stephanie, who was awarded the prize in 2011and is now studying archaeology at University College, London, reports:
"I ended up using most of the money on a few course books, The Human past by Chris Scarre, Bioarchaeology: Interpreting Behaviour from the Human Skeleton by Clark Larsen and some others. The rest of the money went on a tent for my 'Primitive Technology course' (fondly known as Primtech) and the West Dean archaeological training course. At Primtech we learnt skills such as flint knapping, spear making, copper smelting and deer butchery (attached is a photo of my group and me with the skin). West Dean was a crash course in archaeological field work skills for two weeks on a pre-historic site in Sussex, where we learnt to excavate and interpret, fill in context sheets, and do surveys. Since then I have spent a month in Israel excavating at an early Bronze Age site called Tel Bet Yerah and will hopefully be going back next year. Next month I will be in North Cyprus digging an Iron Age site which I am really looking forward to.
